things to do in Salisbury

For such a small city Salisbury packs a lot in. The cathedral, Old Sarum, Wilton House, the market – and of course, Stonehenge is just a bus ride away.

The cathedral was built in 1258 and has a spire reaching 123 metres tall and is home to one of the four remaining original copies of the Magna Carta. Just a short stroll away is the fascinating narrow lanes, with small shops and cafes. On Tuesdays and Saturdays Salisbury hosts a market, as it has done since 1227.

Wilton House remains home to the Earls of Pembroke and has done since it was given to the first earl in 1544 by Henry VIII. And your visit starts at New Canal in the centre of Salisbury by jumping on Red 3!

And if that isn’t enough history, you can’t miss Stonehenge. There is plenty of legend and suspicion behind the original purpose of the stones, which are believed to be over 4,000 years old. You will learn much more on the Stonehenge Tour. Get an inclusive ticket that covers the bus trip with its informative commentary and entry into Stonehenge where you will be guided at your own pace by interactive handsets. With frequent trips back to Salisbury you can stay as long as you like.

But whilst you do the Stonehenge Tour, don’t forget to break you journey at Old Sarum. The orginal site of the city of Salisbury – or Sarum as the Romans called it. Now you can explore the ruins and imagine how it was 3,000 years ago.

If the here and now is more your thing, you get the X3 to Bournemouth for great golden beaches and some sea air on the Pier. Or the X7 to Southampton for the region’s best shopping.
