As part of this renewed contract we have pledged to invest over £1.4 million to provide one new Scania single deck bus, 6 new Scania double deck buses and a Mercedes Benz articulated Bendy Bus.
The first of the new vehicles in the new Unilinx livery were in full operation on Monday 11 January 2010 despite the poor weather conditions.
’Around 15,000 students use University routes every week,’ said University Estates Manager Stuart Laird. ’We are delighted to offer more comfort, security and easy access on the new vehicles that also use the latest engine technology to be Euro 3 and 5 emission compliant,’
Alex Carter, regional Managing Director for the Go Ahead Group, commented against the criticism of the introduction of the first articulated Bendy Bus to be introduced on a local road: ’Route trials carried out in November were successful and driver training over the last few weeks has not given us any safety concerns. The Bendy Bus has the ability to carry over 140 passengers compared to 90 people in a double decker and its three doors allow fast boarding and disembarkation. We believe that it will make travel easier for students on the busiest route between Bournemouth and Wallisdown during peak times.’
